The exhibition Printed Images in the Age of Bruegel, a collaboration between BOZAR and the Royal Library of Belgium, presents a picture of the production of engravings in the southern Netherlands during the Bruegel period, whose pictorial work is not that a tiny sample but which, reputation of the master obliges, overshadows many other images and illustrations on paper which are as many real jewels to discover. Engraving, a flexible and versatile medium, was used in various forms of visual communication, from "newspapers" of the time to political propaganda. Of course, not all the engravings that came out of the press were art-related, even though those of the painters, sculptors and architects of talent were of artistic quality. The advent and growth of the "art of engraving" in Bruegel's century is therefore not just an artistic success story. The totally mastered know-how and entrepreneurial daring have also played a major role.
