A young black lesbian filmmaker (played by Dunye) delves into the life of The Watermelon Woman, a 1930s black actress known for playing 'mammy' archetypes.
The first feature film directed by a black lesbian, initially premiered at Berlinale, is seen as a landmark of New Queer Cinema.
