Democracies are struggling in an age of populism, polarization, and post-truth. In a world of competing political groups presenting conflicting facts, citizens are left unsure whom to trust or which facts to believe. The role of honesty in civic life is at risk, hindering our ability to address pressing problems. This lecture explains honesty, its connection to truth, and its critical importance and vulnerability in today’s democracies. It also provides guidance on teaching honesty and truth to younger generations to sustain healthy democracies. Sarah Stitzlein, a professor of education philosophy at the University of Cincinnati, USA, focuses on how schools can prepare citizens for current political challenges.
