While the representation of landscapes is now a staple of museum walls, there was a time when this practice was considered a minor genre. Starting in the mid-19th century, with the work of artists painting outdoors, this motif came back into fashion. Landscapes were driven by a growing interest in nature, linked to the discovery and invention of new spaces, both real and imaginary, as well as new technologies (e.g., photography). From a pictorial object, it evolved into a cultural concern as the fragility of natural environments became apparent, necessitating its protection and preservation.
