The story is inspired by the case of Johann Christian Woyzeck (1780-1824) in Leipzig, a former soldier, wig maker and unemployed hairdresser accused of stabbing his mistress, the widow of surgeon Woost, on June 21, 1821.

Büchner's brother, Ludwig, collected his writings and had them published with an introduction and a biography in 1850 by Sauerländer in Frankfurt. Bertolt Brecht brought the play to prominence in the 20th century, much like the Surrealists did for the Marquis de Sade. Woyzeck is now considered a classic of German literature. However, the work was never finished, and the order we know today was determined by what seemed most logical. The recovered writings were not yet titled, and Woyzeck was only a provisional title.
