Eniwaye Oluwaseyi: Buried Roots Up in the Air - Part 1
Eniwaye Oluwaseyi’s paintings, primarily centred around portraiture while bridging the gap between figuration and expressionism, examine identity and its influence in shared spaces. The works originate from memory, family and friends' photos, and visual fragments perceived by the artist to create psychological reality. With a strong visual language and distinct accent present in each painting, he uses bold colours and marked brush strokes to give his artwork a strong physical presence. “I try to combine unusual colors and techniques,” says the artist. Navigating individual struggles, his works convey a personalized view of psychological reality and its integration into the current socio-political climate. They evoke feelings of hope and redemption. By combining modern techniques with traditional portraiture, Oluwaseyi began his art studies during his bioengineering studies, inspired by YouTube tutorials. The artist primarily works with oil painting, layering materials that gradually reveal sculptural and luminous tableaus.
