A place where history still whispers...
In the heart of Esch-sur-Alzette, the National Museum of the Resistance and Human Rights tells an essential story: that of Luxembourg during the Second World War. A story of courage, choices, silences too… and memory.
Since 1956, this place has recounted the resistance against the Nazi occupation, life under the dictatorship, the realities of the concentration camps, and the fate of the Jewish community in Luxembourg. Fragments of history which, put together, paint a powerful narrative, both intimate and universal.
Recently redesigned, the museum now offers an immersive permanent exhibition that sheds light on the mechanisms of the Nazi regime and its consequences, while also opening up a broader reflection on human rights, citizenship and memory (subjects that still resonate, even long after).
We wander among archives, testimonies and installations, we stop, we observe… and sometimes, we feel (like when a story tugs at your heart a little without warning).
And then there are also these moments for exchange: guided tours, conferences, round tables, or even a memory trail through the city, to continue the reflection beyond the walls.
Since last year, the MNRDH has been presenting the Women in Conflict exhibition series, dedicated to women in times of war: those who resist, protect, and survive despite the conflicts. A powerful and necessary project, which invites us to look at history and current events through perspectives often overlooked.
With Women in War, the museum enters the final phase of this cycle. A particularly striking exhibition, which gives even more meaning to the visit… and perhaps the perfect time to step inside this place if you haven't already.
And then it must be said: the building is simply incredible, both inside and out, as if it already carried within it part of the memory it tells.
A place to discover in order to understand, to remember… and not to forget.
