David and Jonathan - Theater
After Erismena by Francesco Cavalli, Jean Bellorini returns to the Théâtres de la Ville with a new opera production, David et Jonathas, a lyric tragedy composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier on a libretto by Father François de Paule Bretonneau. David and Jonathan is the story of an unconditional friendship, described in the Books of Samuel in the Old Testament. Jean Bellorini's rereading of this story is done through the eyes of Saul. Having gone mad following the loss of his son, and his multiple military battles, Saul, a fallen contemporary tyrant, is now silent and can no longer defend himself against anything. Saul becomes a monster of our time, even if, for Jean Bellorini, the work also radiates a certain idealism and nourishes the hope of a youth who opposes and imposes himself in the face of authoritarian power. As with Erismena, Jean Bellorini combines opera and theater in this tragedy which speaks of memory and the traces we leave. Musical director Sébastien Daucé leads his ensemble Correspondances, specialist in French sacred repertoire of the Grand Siècle.
