The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Italy's most iconic cities and regions. Spanning four centuries and showcasing works by Italian, Dutch, French, and British painters, it features idealized ancient landscapes, numerous vedute, and everyday urban scenes. These paintings are united by the southern light, architectural elegance, landscape charm, and the pervasive influence of antiquity.
In addition to views of the mentioned five cities, the exhibition includes capricci—creative compositions of ancient ruins set in pastoral landscapes. Highlights include the Roman squares painted by Gaspar van Wittel (1652-1736), the Venice of Canaletto (1697-1768), and the industrial city of Milan as envisioned by futurist Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916).
At the end of the exhibition, visitors of all ages can create their own digital collage capriccio. A painting corner and a quiz round out the offerings for families with children.
