My Own Private Idaho (Pride Season)
USA 1991 | Gus Van Sant | vostFR | 103' | 35mm | Cast: River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Russo, Udo Kier.
► Best Actor (Phoenix), Venice 1991.
Mike and Scott live among Portland's outcasts, sharing their loneliness, drugs, and the men and women they sell themselves to. Mike is introverted, homosexual, and suffers from narcolepsy. An abandoned child, he is obsessed with finding his mother.
"After..., Gus Van Sant finds some misfits on the road, a kind of heavenly bum, like Kerouac. The lyricism of certain sequences owes a lot to Hollywood melodramas, those of Sirk in particular. Absence of the father, love hindered by money and social climbing. The story of this film catches up with that of its actors: River Phoenix, a luminous angel, finds his finest role here. A few years later, the actor died of an overdose. At the same time, his partner Keanu Reeves, who, in the film, betrays him to integrate into the system, was starting a career as a dynamic young leading man in blockbusters."
