Conference: From Allotment Gardens to the Corner of the Earth and the Home
The conference is a tribute to the forerunners of the Allotment and Home movement. It will discuss the societies and circles that preceded it and advocated for agricultural and horticultural practices in harmony with scientific progress.
The individuals whose names will be mentioned promoted gardening for reasons of public health and social peace. The garden was intended to make the worker docile, homebound, thrifty, and sober. The rise of the "Coin du Terre et du Foyer" (Counter of Land and Home) is recounted within the tumultuous context of Differdange's local politics, at a time when Mayor Émile Mark had to contend with the individualism of the local sections, which felt little solidarity with one another.
