Every Wednesday, Pierre Brochant and his friends organize a "dîner de cons" (dinner for fools). The concept is simple: each participant brings along a "fool," and whoever has the most remarkable guest wins. Tonight, Pierre is happy; he believes he has found the rare gem: François Pignon, an accountant at the Ministry of Finance and a fan of matchstick models. However, Pierre doesn't know that Pignon, always eager to help, is an unlucky man who turns everything into disaster. A meeting between two destinies that should never have crossed.
