Shakespeare’s most famous "hell ride", the so-called Scottish Play, is here distilled to two people and its fiery essence: Macbeth and his Lady Macbeth. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth do not merely dream of seizing the Scottish crown and absolute power after being seduced by supernatural forces – they cruelly enact their plans, eventually falling into ruin due to their own ambition and hubris.
John von Düffel, author, translator, dramaturge and, from 2025, director of the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg, is known for his subtle, intelligent, and powerful adaptations of classics. For William Shakespeare’s masterpiece "Macbeth", he has created an intense psychological chamber play that is both a political thriller and an in-depth study of a complex couple’s relationship. The captivating power of the language exerts a pull that is impossible to escape.
In Sewan Latchinian’s concentrated staging, Jacqueline Macaulay and Hans-Werner Meyer, a real-life couple, portray the Scottish royal couple. Brilliant and disturbing. This “Macbeth” is an evening of drama focused on its essence, profoundly sustained by two fabulous protagonists showing every facet.
