In 1987 in Maryland, Conor Marsh, 36, leads a solitary life with his dog Sandy and makes a living as an ASCII artist. His only regular human contact is a neighbor who leaves groceries at his door. When Conor discovers a mysterious video game, he is intrigued by its innovative concept that involves scanning real people into the game’s storyline. But when Sandy disappears and the line between the game and reality begins to blur, Conor is drawn into a fantastic quest to bring her home. Delightfully whimsical and nostalgic, OBEX makes the most of its pre-Internet setting and uses obsolete technology to reflect on our current digital habits. Birney skillfully navigates between fairy-tale adventure and horror, supported by an electronic soundtrack with analog accents that enhances the film’s lo-fi textures and offbeat originality.
