Die Panne - Theatre
The questions of justice and guilt are central themes in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's comedy "Die Panne". The story tells of Alfredo Traps, who has to interrupt his journey due to a car breakdown. He finds shelter with a retired judge. He spends the evening with his host and three other retired colleagues: a judge, a prosecutor, a defense lawyer, and an executioner. During dinner, which turns into a feast, the four elderly men explain to Traps that they like to reenact famous trials. Lacking a defendant for that evening, they encourage Traps to take on the role, which he readily accepts. Convinced of his own innocence, he soon finds himself increasingly ensnared by the elders’ twisted game. By the end of the night, a death sentence is pronounced.
