Opening - Marie-Claude Deffarge Gordian Troeller - No Pictures to Dream About
Marie-Claude Deffarge (1924 – 1984) and Gordian Troeller (1917 – 2003) were outstanding figures in European journalism. Originally from France and Luxembourg, they worked as a team for decades, producing photo reports and films that informed a wide audience in Germany, Luxembourg, France, and other countries about global crises. Their collective work, Troeller / Deffarge, is at the heart of this exhibition, marking the 100th anniversary of Marie-Claude Deffarge’s birth and presented from a new perspective.
Highly regarded and often discussed, their work contributed to debates on revolutions, development aid, and feminism in the second half of the 20th century. Polyglot and open-minded, they met people from five continents whose lives were impacted by colonization and globalization. They challenged sensationalist journalism and aimed to promote intercultural understanding and reduce Eurocentrism.
This museum exhibition brings together Deffarge & Troeller’s photographic and film work. It provides a resource to better understand the roots of current issues such as economic crises, migration, environmental destruction, and discrimination. The exhibition traces their journey from the 1950s through their projects, working methods, and intellectual network.
