Can peace be (de)scribed? Kann man Frieden (be)schreiben? Saturday at the Theatres, organised in collaboration with the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO & the National Library of Luxembourg Objection! Questions of Justice series In world literature, peace and war constitute two poles shaping reflection on the human condition. From ancient epics to contemporary novels, war reveals the destructive forces at work in history, exposing the violence, loss and moral fractures of societies. Peace, by contrast, appears as an ethical and political horizon, often fragile and always in need of reconstruction. Ironically, through history and vocabulary, treaties known as peace treaties are often the source of new conflicts. As part of the exhibition La paix in/achevée, presented at the National Library from October onwards, the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO is organising—in collaboration with the Théâtres de la Ville—a session of Saturdays at the Theatres devoted to a staged reading of texts from world literature concerning cruelly concrete wars and dramatically abstract peace.
