Grand Tourists to Turner. British artists in Europe, 1750-1850 (Waiting list)

In addition to paintings and drawings by the famous landscape painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), the exhibition features works by his equally renowned contemporaries such as John Robert Cozens, Francis Towne, William Pars, Richard Wilson, and Joseph Wright of Derby. For centuries, Italy, land of Antiquity and the Renaissance, attracted travellers and artists. But in the 19th century, influenced by Romanticism, exploration expanded to other parts of Europe such as the Swiss Alps or the valleys of the Seine, Loire, and Rhine. Interest extended from Roman ruins and bucolic landscapes to Gothic cathedrals and medieval castles. Turner and the other British artists featured illustrate this pivotal shift in landscape representation. The exhibition also presents seven views of the city of Luxembourg painted by Turner during his visits in 1824 and 1839.
