Venice has always fascinated people around the world, and Germany in particular. Nearly 150 years before Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote his Venetian Epigrams in 1795, one of the greatest German composers of the Baroque era, Johann Rosenmüller, lived in Venice for almost a quarter of a century. Rosenmüller was 26 when he embarked on a year-long study trip to Italy, which also took him to Venice. Ten years later, when he ran into trouble with the law in Leipzig, he fled to Venice, where he was able to start a new life and remained for 24 years. Rosenmüller’s music wonderfully combines his German roots with the revolutionary trends of Venice in his time. Our programme includes some of Johann Rosenmüller’s most important works for small ensembles.
