UNESCO GEODIVERSITY DAYS 2026 In 2021, UNESCO decided to designate 6 October of each year as International Geodiversity Day. This day is celebrated worldwide to bring people closer to nature in all its aspects. On this day, we should discover the different aspects and functions of geodiversity and understand why it is important to protect it. International Geodiversity Day in Luxembourg Luxembourg has been participating in Geodiversity Day since 2021. This year, from Saturday 3 October to Tuesday 6 October, several events will be organised to give everyone the opportunity to discover the geodiversity of our country. They will take place in different regions of Luxembourg, in Villerupt (France) and in Martelange (Belgium). Nature walks, a conference and guided tours will be offered. The events are organised by the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO, the UNESCO Biosphere Minett, the UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall and the Slate Museum, Haut-Martelange. Why is geodiversity important? Geodiversity is the abiotic equivalent of biodiversity and describes the diversity of geological, geomorphological, pedological and hydrological features and processes. Geodiversity therefore consists of minerals, rocks, sediments, fossils, soils, water, landforms, tectonic elements, as well as their structures and arrangements. It includes all natural processes that influence, maintain or modify matter or form (e.g. tectonics, erosion, …).
