Free trade is often presented as self-evident: opening markets, facilitating exchanges, stimulating growth… and everyone benefits. But is it really that simple? Between Europe and Africa, economic partnership agreements organise trade relations between partners who are not necessarily equal. Behind tariffs, rules of origin and investment promises lie political choices affecting agriculture, local industries, jobs and states’ ability to determine their own development. With Professor Thierry Amougou, this conference will examine the power relations shaping exchanges between Europe and Africa, who benefits from market opening and who bears its costs, as well as alternative models for economic relations.
