A BIT OF HISTORY: 150 YEARS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN LUXEMBOURG

First things first, a quick history lesson (I promise, it’ll be quick and there won’t be a test on it). In Luxembourg, public transportation has been part of the landscape for 150 years now!  Back then, modes of transportation were quite different, but the goal was already the same: to connect neighborhoods and make life easier for residents 🏘️

A hundred years ago, a new milestone was reached with the arrival of the city’s first buses 🚌 Back then, it was a real game-changer: more flexibility than previous modes of transport, routes that gradually expanded, and a transportation system that began to take shape around the capital.

Today, the network has changed significantly! More modern, more extensive, and more frequent, it is part of a vision for sustainable mobility accessible to all, since, as of March 1, 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make public transportation free throughout its entire territory. This major development has further strengthened the role of public transportation in the lives of Luxembourgers and cross-border commuters.

A DAY TO TAKE A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES

On June 6, 2026, the City of Luxembourg’s Bus Service will open its doors to the public for a special event. Throughout the day, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the capital’s public transit system: guided tours, an introduction to the various services, fun facts, and how the network operates… A unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of the Bus Service and meet the people who keep public transit running every day 💺🚍 and maybe even impress your elders with your new knowledge about the history of buses in Luxembourg 😉

At the same time, an exhibition looks back on 150 years of public transport and 100 years of city buses, offering a chance to appreciate how far we’ve come from the first routes to today’s network!

Parents and children can also enjoy creative activities (face painting, crafts), wooden games, all accompanied by live music and food trucks for a relaxed and fun family day out.

A free, unique, and pretty cool outing to rediscover a service we all use often…📆 Saturday, June 6, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
