It is carnival time, and in just 36 hours, the seemingly harmonious marriage of Fridolin and Albertine is turned upside down and tested. Fridolin, a practicing doctor, loses himself in the Viennese night among patients and prostitutes, eventually landing at a clandestine masked ball. Albertine, who must stay home to look after the child, experiences similar ventures only in her dreams and thoughts, but these are impactful. The relationship between the two is shaken by sudden desires and wishes that they had denied and hidden from each other. In Arthur Schnitzler's novella, published exactly 100 years ago and later adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick titled 'Eyes Wide Shut,' no dream is entirely a dream. Fantasies appear no less real than reality. The narrative oscillates between the conscious, the unconscious, and the realm in between. This stage adaptation by director Frank Hoffmann delves deeply into Schnitzler's shadowy world with an enthusiastic ensemble.
