During the carnival season, within just 36 hours, the seemingly harmonious marriage of Fridolin and Albertine is turned upside down and put to the test. Dr. Fridolin loses himself in the Viennese night between patients and prostitutes, ultimately ending up at a clandestine masquerade ball. Albertine, who stays at home to look after their child, experiences such adventures only in her dreams and thoughts—but these are intense. Their relationship is shaken by sudden desires and wishes they deny themselves and have hidden from each other. "Dreams are my reality": in Arthur Schnitzler's novella "Traumnovelle", published exactly 100 years ago and much later adapted by Stanley Kubrick as "Eyes Wide Shut", "no dream is entirely a dream." Fantasies appear as real as reality. The narrative oscillates between the conscious and the unconscious, exploring the mysterious in-between. In this stage adaptation, director Frank Hoffmann and a spirited ensemble delve deep into Schnitzler's shadow world, which also serves as a vivid panorama of the bigoted and morbid Viennese society of the fin de siècle.
