Rebellion | The Curious Bards
- concert
- classical music
After three programs exploring popular music and its relationship with art music in Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, and Norway, The Curious Bards now examine these close connections within the work of Henry Purcell, one of the greatest English composers of the 17th century. His secular music clearly shows the influence of popular music, especially in his dance pieces, theatrical music, and operas. Several airs and songs, performed here by the guest mezzo-soprano Ilektra Platiopoulou, express this connection with popular traditions. This concert offers a new perspective on Purcell, often celebrated for his operas, but whose popular genius still deserves to be (re)discovered.
